For you, what does it mean to be a motorcyclist?
A Motorcyclist is not just a piston head who has a saddle beneath him,who has his balls licking to the tank every weekend and a wrist twisting the throttle. There is much more to it.Munching miles on your steed, having fun with your friends in group rides, not only helping your biking buddies but helping your society, dreaming about hanging out with hot chicks, being safe and responsible, respect for everyone..And the list goes on.These are some actions and qualities which every motorcyclist should inherit to make this world a better place.Motorcycling is all about making you believe in yourself to be yourself and doing the right thing.
How has motorcycling changed you and your life?
Being responsible and safe is the most important lesson which i had learned from my passion. There used to be days when i was reckless on the road,i was like any other poser who used to pull up the bike in the traffic, sounding my way ahead of everyone. It was Xbhp,a new chapter who taught me the real meaning of motorcycling. And this how my passion became one of greatest mentor,teacher,guru..etc.
How would you justify the inherent dangers and risk involved in long distance touring on motorcycles?
Long distance touring has never been easy, specially in India. It takes practice, experience, patience and many more things to accomplish the ride without any casualties.According to me below are the major points which can be considered as risk's in Long distance travelling.
Fatigue - Rest when you feel low, there is no need to push yourself when you are feeling tired.Fatigue weakens your concentration..Kills your judgment and when you loose these two things you remain in gods hand to be alive
Incomplete planning - An incomplete plan is equal to no plan at all.Routes, hotels, fuel pumps, proper spares, emergency contact number, first aid kit are few of those things which are must in a long distance ride
Third Party Hazards - Name sounds funny, but it has a real meaning to it.The Oil spills, gravels, self proclaimed-helmetless motogp racers..etc
Tell us briefly about your 2 most memorable motorcycle tours?
Its very difficult to choose the two most memorable rides because every ride you do is special and memorable in its own way.
1) 6 Days Solo ride to Uttarakhand - Magical Uttarakhand i like to call it.The ride happened before the recent disaster, the natural disaster which has taken many lives and had left entire nation in a shock.
In my 6 days adventure i started from Noida and covered Dehradun,Mussorie,Chakrata,Gangotri,Deoria Taal,Bageshwar and the disaster which happened on the last day of ride,10 Kms before Munsyari.
2) 5 Days solo ride from Melbourne to Sydney and back - Doing a motorcycle tour in a foreign country was always a dream for me.And like they say "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work'.
As a motorcycle tourer, how have you contributed to the society/brotherhood and plan to do so in the years to come?
I haven't contributed much to the society, but have done small contributions to make it a better place.Started the Good Samaritan Mission initiative in 2011,where bikers from Pune-Mumbai get together on 01 May every year and visit the Orphanage/Old Age Home called Good Samaritan Mission in Mumbai. For the entire day we sing, dance, crack jokes and share happiness with the kids and at the end of the day donate something useful which they need on day to day basis.
For brotherhood,i have always encouraged my brothers to be safe and responsible on the road.Wear safety gears all the time and contribute to the society on every possible way they can.As a tourer has always helped them to plan their long rides, plan safe itenary and safe practices.
What are the best and the worst things about motorcycle touring in India?
There is an endless list for both the questions,I will try to fit the best answers in the 850 limit
Best - 1) Motorcycles has the easy access to all those awesome places where one cannot go easily with other means.
2) Freedom of taking any route without any hesitation
3) Low maintenance cost and Low travelling cost due to better fuel economy
4) Being a motorhead, you get to connect like minded peoples just by waving each other and a formal introduction over Cutting Tea
Worst - 1) Road conditions are not good in most of the parts of India. If at some places its good, the surface is not uniform..a suprise pot hole is there in every other kilometer to screw your ride.
2) Most of the people do not drive/ride responsibly. Which includes things like Lane cutting, reckless overtaking, racing on public roads
Golden Question : How do you feel when you ride?
This is a million dollar question :) I feel Freedom,Accomplishment,Discovery,Solitude,Fear,Calmness,Adrenalin Rush,Camaraderie,Sounds,Smells,Scenery,Anonymous,Individuality,Belonging,Pleasure,Exploration,Weather,Exclusivity,Weightlessness,Powerful,Rebel,Alive,Invisible and the list is endless. Feeling of riding your steed is just so intoxicating and addicting to the point that I find any excuse possible to jump on the saddle and go for a ride but its also not without its moments of doubt and fear.
