As a motorcycle customizer, what does a motorcycle mean to you both as a machine and as a canvas for your art?
A custom motorcycle clearly depicts the attitude of the builder. What lies under the skin - The engine and the drivetrain is what interests me the most. Having been a racing enthusiast with an aggressive approach towards engine building and development has always pushed me to develop better machines. Maintaining proportion and riding dynamics is equally important as enhancing the performance.
How has customizing motorcycles changed you and your life?
Has made me the most popular motorcycle performance builder in the country, the youngest tuner to bag most national championship titles and to start a successful business model in developing and manufacturing performance parts. Being a motorcycle enthusiast, rider and racer, I have gone a full circle in understanding and engineering motorcycles.
How do you relate to the possibility of your creation, a customized motorcycle, being a work of art for you, being ridden and possibly damaged in a mishap?
All our motorcycles are engineered for maximum performance and safety. Keeping in mind better handling and better braking efficiency. When I see our race bikes crashed out by our riders, it just reminds me of the countless days and sleepless nights spent on every detail.
Tell us briefly about your 2 most memorable custom motorcycle design created and executed by you.
The Suzuki Fiero, which I started customizing way back in 2003 started the whole journey for me. By increasing the displacement and improving the volumetric efficiency of the engine, put me on a whole new track. Setting numerous speed records for its time. This bike kick-started my tuning journey and is indeed the most memorable one. Next is the Yamaha YZF-R15 which I started developing back in 2008 for racing and eventually became the icon of Indian racing. The extent of development done on this motorcycle has taken me a long way and continues to this day. Winning numerous race titles and cracking the fastest lap times around the racing circuit. This will remain my all-time favourite!
As a motorcycle customizer, how have you contributed to the society/brotherhood and plan to do so in the years to come?
Build faster, safer machines for touring, racing and street riding. Develop products to improve riding dynamics and create excitement. Support and help fellow riders to set record rides such as The Saddle Sore attempts by improving the performance and reliability to achieve better results. Improve the racing scenario in the country by building safer and faster machines to improve rider performance and bring up race standards. Great riders are born with good machines!
What are the best and the worst things about being a motorcycle customizer in India?
People’s ignorance towards motorcycle tuning. Really hard to cope with. Performance customization is a totally new concept in India. Its considered a Taboo to modify the engine and only visual mods are popular. Lack of resources, knowledge and qualified tuning outfits is a concern. A roadside mechanic still holds a place higher than an Engineer!
India has good potential to promote racing and performance riding. A huge potential lies within. In years to come, things will surely change.
Golden Question : How do you feel when you ride?
Pure Nirvana! Cleans up everything in my head and the sense of freedom I get is simply unmatched. Riding a tuned motorcycle just ads icing to the cake ;)
